I can't find my left shoe

Four totally unrelated thoughts:

Pull one more day off the countdown to graduation, along with two more tests.

Thanks to Dr. Knoop for actually testing us on material that he at least attempted to teach us this time around.

As much as I dislike the location of LeTourneau, you don't get days like this in November in Washington.

Hooray for the the weekend.

Well, here it is. Certain current and former members of the Iota Beta community have been pestering me to start a blog for the last month or so. I kind of figured I'd do it as soon as I had a little bit more regular access to a computer--my machine is sitting in the 1B storage closet, probably until after I graduate and move into a little bit more permanent quarters--but I was bored this afternoon. So I can't promise that this will be the most regularly updated site, but I'll do my best to not let it fall behind weeks at a time. Anyway, my thought for the day is: do something nice for someone you love, and if you can do it in a sneaky, underhanded way that takes months of planning and secrecy, so much the better. Let me elaborate just a little bit by filling you in on bits and pieces of the last seven years of my life. My parents went to the Philippines as missionaries the summer before my senior year of high school. I stayed in the states to finish up school, and consequently my parents were not able to attend my graduation. It didn't bother me, but I don't think my mom has ever gotten over it. My family was home for furlough this past year (they returned to the Philippines in July), and all my mom talked about was how sorry she was that she hadn't been at my high school graduation, and how disappointed she was that she was going to miss my college graduation as well. As much as she wanted to come, it wasn't going to fit in the budget to fly half-way around the world just before Christmas, and within six months of moving the family back to the Philippines. Enough set-up; the plot begins here, with myself and my dad being the major conspiritors. After my parents got back overseas, I called my dad up and talked to him about the possibility of mom being gone for about a week in the middle of December. He told me she didn't have anything she couldn't get away from so I went ahead and bought her a plane ticket. This was back in August. Fast-forward to October, when I packaged the ticket with a birthday card for my mother, and some odds and ends for my dad. Of course, the package was addressed to my dad. My mom emailed me a couple of weeks later to let me know that the package had arrived, and dad appreciated the things I had sent. The email closed with the line, "I really wish I could be there for your graduation," tipping me off to the fact that my dad was picking up his end of our little cloak and dagger game. He had received the package and hidden the stuff for my mom to save for her birthday. So last night I gave my mom a call to wish her a happy birthday and my dad pulled out the card and tickets and put them in front of her while we were on the phone. About the last intelligible thing I heard her say was, "Tom, what is this? I just got a card that said, 'I'll see you in a couple of weeks.'" I couldn't understand most of what she tried to say through her sobs for the next five minutes, but...well maybe it's something you'll have to experience for yourself sometime. I think that will be all for now. Until next time...

It starts with the shoe. Maybe the next day it's a t-shirt or a sock. You don't know if the washing machine ate it, or your roommate borrowed it a month ago and forgot that it was yours. All you know is that by the end of the week, you're walking to class naked because you don't have any clothes left.
